I’m a filmmaker with a background in communications, marketing and brand development.
Based in the Scottish Highlands I work with individuals and small businesses, from around the UK and beyond, to bring their stories to life on screen.
WHAT I DO
The type of work I do will depend on your needs. It could be a short film for your homepage, or a longer, more in-depth piece to explain what you’re all about. We will work that out together.
I work on every aspect of the film, from my initial meeting with you through to post-production so you always have one point of contact. And if you need help developing and defining your brand so that all your communications fit seamlessly together, I can help you with that too.
CORPORATE FILMMAKING - WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
I started my career making programmes for big brand organisations. My clients included Rolls Royce, BP, NatWest, Yorkshire Water, Gulf Air and Chase Bank and films were primarily for promotional purposes or for training; they also included some TV ads. I wrote, produced, directed and edited programmes, developed interactive CDs (remember those?) and created websites. Each project required in-depth understanding of what the organisation was all about, their products and services and what they were trying to achieve. For some of those years I also ran my own production company so I have a hands-on grasp of what it's like to run a small business.
TO MARKETING AND BRAND DEVELOPMENT
From there I moved into communications and marketing and worked client-side, heading up marketing and external relations departments for commercial and not-for-profit organisations. I still commissioned films, photography and content but this period allowed me to develop my interest in what lies beneath a brand. I spent time working in higher and secondary education, green energy, for an NGO and in the arts and travelled extensively around the world. I was also a trustee and then Chair of a new music ensemble so quickly got to grips with the challenges of surviving as a creative and cultural organisation.
I worked alongside a brilliant team to change the name and develop the brand from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama to the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and wrote and developed their brand and digital strategy. I was also part of the team at Sage Gateshead helping to bring about their transformation to The Glasshouse International Centre for Music which also involved a complete brand review.
USING FILMS TO TELL STORIES, FOR A PURPOSE
Throughout, creating and commissioning audiovisual content as part of any communication strategy has been a constant companion. I’ve always believed in the power of a well made programme or short-form film to tell the stories that matter.
I’ve worked with incredible people, been involved in some complex projects and have learnt heaps along the way. But at the heart of it all, understanding what someone wants to do, developing the best way of doing it, and then making it happen, is what I do best. I just happen to believe that film is a great ways to do it.
